How to Take the Wegovy Pill: Label Rules, Dose Schedule, and How It Compares With the Shot
How to take the Wegovy pill according to the 06/2026 FDA label: one tablet each morning with up to 4 ounces of water, then a 30-minute wait. Includes the 1.5 mg to 25 mg dose schedule, pill vs shot trial results, side effects, and current costs.
To take the Wegovy pill, swallow one tablet whole each morning on an empty stomach with no more than 4 ounces of plain water. Then wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything else, or take other pills. Those are the exact rules in the FDA label, and they matter: the label's own studies show that a full glass of water or a shorter wait lowers how much semaglutide your body absorbs.
The Wegovy pill is an oral form of semaglutide, the same medicine as the weekly Wegovy shot. The FDA approved it on December 22, 2025. This guide follows the current Wegovy Prescribing Information and Medication Guide, revised June 2026, which cover both the tablets and the injection.
In this guide you will learn:

How to Take the Wegovy Pill: The 5-Step Morning Routine
Take the Wegovy pill once a day, first thing in the morning, before any food, drink, or other medicine. The label (section 2.1) and the Medication Guide spell out every step.
- Take it when you wake up, on an empty stomach.
- Swallow one tablet whole with up to 4 ounces of plain water. Four ounces is about half a cup, or 118 mL. Do not split, crush, chew, or dissolve the tablet.
- Take nothing else for at least 30 minutes. No food, no other drinks, and no other medicines by mouth.
- Then eat, drink, and take your other pills. After 30 minutes, the Medication Guide says you can eat, drink, or take other oral medicines.
- Stop at one tablet a day. Never take more than one Wegovy tablet in a day, even if you missed yesterday's dose.
| Rule | What the label says | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| When | Once daily, in the morning, on an empty stomach | Absorption happens mainly in the stomach |
| Liquid | Water only, up to 4 ounces | 50 mL gave higher absorption than 240 mL (a full glass) in a label study |
| How | Swallow whole; do not split, crush, chew, or dissolve | The label allows no other way to take it |
| Wait | At least 30 minutes before food, drinks, or other oral medicines | A longer fast after the dose raised absorption |
| Limit | Not more than one tablet per day | Too much can cause severe nausea and vomiting |
What counts as "other liquids" and "other medicines"
The label names only water. Coffee, tea, juice, milk, and protein shakes all count as other liquids, so they wait until the 30 minutes are up. The label does not say whether sparkling or flavored water counts, so plain still water is the safe choice (general advice).
The label says "other oral medications" but does not list vitamins or supplements by name. To be safe, treat vitamins and supplements like other oral medicines and take them after the 30-minute wait, and ask your pharmacist how to time each one (general advice, not label text). For what "GLP-1" supplements can and cannot do, see GLP-1 supplements.

What the Wegovy Pill Is and When the FDA Approved It
The Wegovy pill is a once-daily semaglutide tablet from Novo Nordisk for weight management and heart risk reduction in adults. The FDA approved it on December 22, 2025, as a new dosage form of Wegovy, according to Drugs@FDA. Novo Nordisk announced on January 5, 2026, that it was available in US pharmacies.
The label (section 1) lists two uses for adults, both alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity:
- Weight management: to reduce excess body weight and keep it off long term in adults with obesity, or with overweight plus at least one weight-related condition.
- Heart risk reduction: to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, or cardiovascular death in adults with established heart disease and obesity or overweight.
Key product facts from the label:
- Four strengths: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg (round tablets) and 25 mg (oval). Each bottle holds 30 tablets.
- One special ingredient: salcaprozate sodium (SNAC), which helps semaglutide get absorbed through the stomach.
- Adults only: tablet safety is not established in children or in people with MASH, a liver condition the injection treats.
- Type 2 diabetes: the tablets were not studied for weight reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes (section 8.6).
- No combining: do not use it with other semaglutide products or any other GLP-1 medicine (section 1).
At approval, Novo Nordisk called it "the first oral GLP-1 medicine for obesity in the US". Foundayo (orforglipron), approved in April 2026 according to Drugs@FDA, is now another FDA-approved oral GLP-1 for weight reduction. Our Foundayo vs Zepbound comparison covers that pill in more detail.
The Wegovy pill is also a different product from Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets. Those are semaglutide tablets for type 2 diabetes, with their own indications and dose schedules: Rybelsus comes in 3, 7, and 14 mg, and Ozempic tablets in 1.5, 4, and 9 mg. Their label (section 2.1) says Rybelsus and Ozempic tablets are not substitutable with each other on a mg-to-mg basis. Do not swap one semaglutide product for another without your prescriber. For every approved option side by side, see our GLP-1 medications list.
Why Water, Fasting, and the 30-Minute Wait Matter
The Wegovy pill has strict rules because a tablet delivers very little semaglutide into the blood. The label estimates oral absorption at about 1% to 2%, compared with 89% for the injection (section 12.3).
Absorption happens mainly in the stomach, with help from SNAC, and blood levels peak about 1 hour after the dose. The label describes two studies in healthy adults:
- Water volume: after an overnight fast, people took a single tablet with 50 mL or 240 mL of water. Absorption was higher with 50 mL, which is about 1.7 ounces.
- Fasting time: over 10 days, people took the tablet with 50 or 120 mL of water and then fasted for 15, 30, 60, or 120 minutes. A longer fast after the dose gave higher absorption. The label found no clinically significant difference between 50 and 120 mL.
The 4-ounce limit (118 mL) is about the larger volume in that second study (120 mL). The 30 minutes is a minimum, since the label says "at least 30 minutes." Ask your prescriber before you change the routine in either direction. The label also reports that chronic gastritis or reflux disease did not meaningfully change semaglutide blood levels.
Practical tips that make the routine stick
These are habits, not label instructions:
- Measure the water once. Use a measuring cup so you know what half a cup looks like in your glass.
- Set a 30-minute timer. Shower, dress, or walk the dog while it runs.
- Move other morning pills to after breakfast. Ask your pharmacist first if any of them has its own timing rule.
Wegovy Pill Dose Schedule (1.5 mg to 25 mg)
The Wegovy pill starts at 1.5 mg once daily and steps up every 30 days to 4 mg, 9 mg, and then the 25 mg maintenance dose from day 91. This schedule comes from Table 2 of the FDA label (section 2.3).
| Days | Daily dose | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 30 | 1.5 mg | Starting dose |
| 31 to 60 | 4 mg | Escalation |
| 61 to 90 | 9 mg | Escalation |
| 91 onward | 25 mg | Maintenance |
What the label adds to the table:
- Why the slow start: the step-up lowers the risk of stomach and gut side effects.
- Slowing down is allowed: if you do not tolerate a dose, your prescriber can consider delaying the next increase. The label sets no fixed length for that delay.
- One maintenance dose: 25 mg once daily is the only labeled maintenance dose. The lower strengths appear only as steps.
- If 25 mg is too much: the label says to consider switching to the Wegovy injection at 1.7 mg once weekly.
- Whole tablets only: you cannot split a tablet to make an in-between dose. Our page on microdosing GLP-1 explains why doses below the label are not an approved option.
Each bottle holds one strength, and 30 tablets cover one month. Your prescriber decides when you move up, and this page gives no personal dosing advice.
Plan Meals and Protein Around Your Morning Dose
With the Wegovy pill, breakfast simply moves to at least 30 minutes after your tablet. The rest of the day follows the reduced-calorie eating plan the label pairs with the drug. In OASIS 4, participants got counseling on a diet of about 500 fewer calories a day plus at least 150 minutes of activity a week (label section 14.2).
Some general ideas that fit the routine:
- Prepare breakfast during the wait. Scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt with berries, or cottage cheese with fruit are ready in 30 minutes or less.
- Put protein at every meal. Smaller portions are common as appetite drops, so protein first helps you reach your target.
- Eat slowly and stop when full. Large, rich meals are harder on a stomach that empties more slowly.
Protein matters during any weight loss because some of the weight lost comes from lean mass. A 2025 joint nutrition advisory notes that targets of 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day have been proposed during active weight loss, though the right body weight to use is unsettled and strength training is also needed to protect muscle. If you want high-protein recipes and meal ideas sized for a smaller appetite, see our GLP-1 meal plan and protein guide.

Missed Doses, Other Medicines, and Storage
If you miss a Wegovy pill, skip it and take your next tablet the following day. Never take two tablets in one day to catch up (label section 2.4).
Missed doses
The pill rule is simpler than the shot rule. For the weekly injection, the label says to take a missed dose if the next one is more than 2 days away, and to skip it if the next one is less than 2 days away. The label has no separate rule for missing several tablets in a row. If that happens, call your prescriber before you restart (general advice).
Other medicines
The Wegovy pill slows stomach emptying, which can change how your body absorbs other oral medicines (label section 7.2). The label highlights these points:
- Levothyroxine: in a label study, total thyroxine (T4) exposure rose 33% when a single levothyroxine dose was taken with the semaglutide tablet. The label advises monitoring the effects of oral medicines like this, so ask your prescriber about timing and thyroid blood tests.
- Medicines that need close monitoring: the label advises more monitoring for drugs with a narrow therapeutic index.
- Insulin or sulfonylureas: the risk of low blood sugar goes up, and your prescriber may lower those doses.
- Birth control pills: ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel levels showed no clinically significant change in a label study.
Storage and taking too much
Store the tablets at 68°F to 77°F, with brief temperature excursions between 59°F and 86°F allowed (label section 16). Keep them in the original closed bottle, in a dry place. The Medication Guide says "Do not store in any other container," so a weekly pill organizer is out.
The Medication Guide says too much Wegovy can cause severe nausea, severe vomiting, and severe low blood sugar. Call your healthcare provider or Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222, or go to the nearest emergency room right away.
How the Wegovy Pill Compares With the Shot
The Wegovy pill and the Wegovy injection produced similar average weight loss in separate trials: 13.6% with the 25 mg pill at 64 weeks and 14.9% with the 2.4 mg shot at 68 weeks, each against 2.4% on placebo (label figures). We found no head-to-head trial comparing the two directly. The pill needs the morning routine above, while the weekly shot can be taken at any time of day, with or without meals. Our full Wegovy pill vs injection comparison covers doses, side effects, costs, and who might prefer each form.
Switching between the pill and the shot
The label (section 2.5) gives these switching rules. Your prescriber makes the call:
- Shot to pill: adults on the 2.4 mg injection can start the 25 mg tablet one week after their last shot.
- Pill to shot: people on the 25 mg tablet can start the 2.4 mg injection the day after their last tablet, or 1.7 mg if the 25 mg tablet was not tolerated.
- Type 2 diabetes: if more weight reduction is needed on the 25 mg tablet, the label says to consider switching to the 1.7 mg injection and following the injection dose schedule.
The label gives a shot-to-pill rule only for the 2.4 mg dose. If you use another injection dose, your prescriber decides how to switch.
Wegovy Pill Side Effects and When to Get Help
The most common Wegovy pill side effects are nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. The label (section 6.1) says their types and frequency in the tablet trial were similar to those seen with the Wegovy injection. For tirzepatide, our Zepbound side effects page covers that label in the same detail. To see how the two brands compare overall, read Wegovy vs Zepbound.
The label's tablet safety data come from 204 adults who took the 25 mg dose for up to 64 weeks. Label figures specific to the pill include:
- Severe stomach and gut reactions: 2% on the pill vs 0% on placebo (section 5.6)
- Stopping because of gut side effects: 3.4% vs 2%
- Skin sensations (dysesthesia), such as tingling, burning, or skin pain: 5% vs 0%
- Gallstones: 2.5% vs 1% (sections 5.3 and 6.1)
- Heart rate: increases similar to those seen with the injection (section 5.9)
The trial registry lists every adverse event reported during OASIS 4, whatever the cause.
| Event | Wegovy pill 25 mg (204 people) | Placebo (102 people) |
|---|---|---|
| Nausea | 46.6% | 18.6% |
| Vomiting | 30.9% | 5.9% |
| Constipation | 20.1% | 9.8% |
| Indigestion | 18.1% | 8.8% |
| Diarrhea | 17.6% | 8.8% |
| Headache | 11.8% | 8.8% |
| Burping | 10.3% | 2.0% |
| Upper stomach pain | 8.8% | 2.0% |
| Acid reflux (GERD) | 7.8% | 4.9% |
| Fatigue | 7.4% | 1.0% |
| Stomach pain | 7.4% | 3.9% |
| Decreased appetite | 6.9% | 1.0% |
| Hair loss | 6.4% | 2.0% |
| Urinary tract infection | 6.4% | 2.9% |
| Dizziness | 5.4% | 1.0% |
Source: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05564117, weeks 0 to 71. These are all reported events, not only those caused by the drug, so they do not match label tables line for line. Colds, COVID-19, and flu were common in both groups and are not shown. Serious adverse events of any cause: 3.9% on the pill vs 8.8% on placebo.
Warnings that apply to the pill
The Wegovy pill carries the same boxed warning as the injection. In rodents, semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumors, and it is unknown whether it does so in people. Do not use it if you or a family member has had medullary thyroid carcinoma, if you have MEN 2, or if you have had a serious allergic reaction to semaglutide or to any ingredient in the tablets, including SNAC.
The label also warns about pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, low blood sugar in people with diabetes (especially with insulin or sulfonylureas), kidney problems from dehydration, severe stomach problems, serious allergic reactions, diabetic eye problems in people with type 2 diabetes, a faster heart rate, and a risk of breathing in stomach contents during anesthesia. It does not recommend Wegovy for people with severe gastroparesis.

Wegovy Pill for Women: Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, and Birth Control
Women made up 79% of OASIS 4, the main Wegovy pill trial. The label has three points that matter most for them: stop at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy, avoid breastfeeding while on the tablets, and know that a label study found no meaningful change in birth control pill levels.
Pregnancy
The label (section 8.3) says to stop Wegovy at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy, because semaglutide stays in the body for about 5 to 7 weeks after the last dose. If you become pregnant while using Wegovy for weight loss or heart risk reduction (the pill's two uses), the label says to stop it (section 8.1). SNAC, the absorption helper in the tablets, crossed the placenta in rats. A pregnancy registry collects data from women exposed to Wegovy: call 1-877-390-2760 or visit wegovypregnancyregistry.com.
Breastfeeding
Here the pill and the shot differ. Semaglutide in human milk was below the level the test could measure, but SNAC or its breakdown products were present, so the label says breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Wegovy tablets (section 8.2). The injection contains no SNAC. If you plan to breastfeed, talk with your prescriber about your options.
Birth control and hair loss
In a label study, the Wegovy pill caused no clinically significant change in levels of ethinyl estradiol or levonorgestrel, two common birth control pill hormones. The Wegovy label does not include a backup contraception instruction. This is a lab finding, not advice, so ask your prescriber which method fits you.
The label reports hair loss more often in women than in men. In the 2.4 mg injection trials, it affected 4% of women on Wegovy vs 2% of women on placebo, and 0.9% of men on Wegovy (label section 6.1).
How Much the Wegovy Pill Costs and Where to Get It
As of September 2026, the Wegovy pill costs $149 to $299 a month without insurance through Novo Nordisk's NovoCare self-pay program, depending on the dose. With commercial insurance that covers it, a savings offer can lower the cost to as little as $25 a month.
| Dose | Price per month (1 bottle of 30 tablets) |
|---|---|
| 1.5 mg | $149 |
| 4 mg | $199 |
| 9 mg | $299 |
| 25 mg | $299 |

The 4 mg price was $149 at launch and rose to $199 after April 15, 2026. For Lilly's daily pill, see our Foundayo cost guide. The commercial savings offer caps savings at $100 a month and excludes people with government insurance. Its terms can change at any time.
Medicare GLP-1 Bridge
From July 1, 2026, to December 31, 2027, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge sets a $50 copay for eligible people with Medicare Part D who have not already received a GLP-1 through their Part D plan. It covers Wegovy tablets and injection when prescribed to reduce excess weight. According to the CMS prescriber sheet, eligibility includes:
- Age 18 or older, prescribed the drug for weight reduction
- A BMI of 35 or more, or 30 or more with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or stage 3a or worse kidney disease
- Or a BMI of 27 or more with prediabetes, a prior heart attack or stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease
- Prior authorization from your prescriber
People with type 2 diabetes, moderate to severe sleep apnea, or MASH do not use the Bridge; they go through their Part D plan instead.
Where to get it
You need a prescription. Novo Nordisk said the Wegovy pill was available at more than 70,000 US pharmacies at launch. Insurance coverage varies by plan, so ask your insurer whether the pill is covered and whether prior authorization applies.
The Bottom Line
The Wegovy pill depends on a precise morning routine. These are the points to remember:
- One tablet, every morning: empty stomach, up to 4 ounces of water, swallowed whole, then 30 minutes with nothing else.
- A 90-day climb: 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg, then 25 mg from day 91, on your prescriber's timeline.
- Similar results to the shot in separate trials: 13.6% vs 14.9% average weight loss, with no head-to-head trial.
- Real prices: $149 to $299 a month self-pay as of September 2026, with insurance and Medicare options for some people.
Breakfast is the easiest part to plan once the wait becomes a habit. For high-protein meals that fit a later breakfast and a smaller appetite, see our GLP-1 meal plan and protein guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take the Wegovy pill at night?
The label tells you to take the Wegovy pill in the morning on an empty stomach, so night dosing is not a labeled option. Ask your prescriber before you change when you take it.
Can I drink coffee after taking the Wegovy pill?
Yes, after the 30-minute wait. The label says to take the tablet with water only and to wait at least 30 minutes before any other beverage, and coffee counts as another beverage.
What happens if I drink more than 4 ounces of water with the Wegovy pill?
The label says up to 4 ounces. In a label study, absorption was higher with 50 mL of water than with 240 mL, so a full glass may mean less medicine absorbed. Do not take a second tablet that day.
Can I stay on a low dose of the Wegovy pill?
The label lists 25 mg as the only maintenance dose; the lower strengths are escalation steps. Your prescriber can delay a dose increase if side effects are a problem, and if 25 mg is not tolerated the label suggests considering the 1.7 mg weekly injection.
Can I take the Wegovy pill every other day?
No. The label says one tablet once daily and has no every-other-day schedule. If you miss a day, skip it and take the next tablet the following day.
Can you cut the Wegovy pill in half?
No. The label says to swallow the tablets whole and not to split, crush, chew, or dissolve them.
How long does the Wegovy pill take to work?
The schedule takes 90 days to reach the 25 mg maintenance dose, and the main trial measured 13.6% average weight loss after 64 weeks. Individual results vary.
Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the shot?
In separate trials, average weight loss was 13.6% with the 25 mg pill at 64 weeks and 14.9% with the 2.4 mg shot at 68 weeks. We found no head-to-head trial, and an indirect comparison funded by Novo Nordisk found similar results. For the full comparison, see Wegovy pill vs injection.
Can I switch from Wegovy injections to the pill?
Yes, if your prescriber agrees. The label says adults on the 2.4 mg injection can start the 25 mg tablet one week after their last shot. The label gives a switching rule only for the 2.4 mg dose; if you use another dose, your prescriber decides how to switch.
